| Organic Chem, Chapter 12 | Organic Chem, Chapter 12 |
|---|---|
| Organic chemistry | The study of carbon compounds. |
| Functional group | An atom or group of atoms within a molecule that has a characteristic structure and chemical behavior. |
| Hydrocarbon | An organic compound that contains only carbon and hydrogen |
| Alcane | A hydrocarbon that has only single bonds. |
| Straight-chain alkane | An alkane that has all its carbons connected in a row. |
| Branched-chain alkane | An alkane that has a branching connection of carbons. |
| Isomers | Compounds with the same molecular formula but different structures. |
| Constitutional isomers | Compounds with the same molecular formula but different connections among their atoms. |
| Condensed structure | A shorthand way of drawing structures in which C--C and C--H bonds are understood rather than shown. |
| Conformation | The specific three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in a molecule. |
| Substituent | An atom or group of atoms attatched to a parent compound. |
| Alkyl group | The part of an alkane that remains when a hydrogen atom is removed. |
| Methyl group | The --CH3 alkyl group |
| Ethyl group | The -CH2CH3 alkyl group |
| Propyl group | The straight-chain alkyl group -CH2CH2CH3. |
| Isopropyl group | The branched-chain alkyl group -CH(CH3)2. |
| Primary carbon atom | A carbon atom with one other carbon attached to it. |
| Secondary carbon atom | A carbon atom with two other carbons attached to it. |
| Tertiary carbon atom | A carbon atom with three other carbons attached to it. |
| Quaternary carbon atom | A carbon atom with four other carbons attached to it. |
| Combustion | A chemical reaction that produces a flame, usually because of burning with oxygen. |
| Cycloalkane | An alkane that contains a ring of carbon atoms |
| Line structure | A shorthand way of drawing structures in which atoms aren't shown; instead, a carbon atom is understood to be at every intersection of lines and hydrogens are filled in mentally. |
