Weld Quality

Intro To Metals Weld Quality 2019-2020

TermDefinition
Arc Blow The deflection of an arc from its intended path by magnetic forces
Brazing A method of joining metal using heat and a filler metal with a melting point above 842°F (450°C). Unlike welding, the base metal is not melted during the brazing process
Code A document that establishes the minimum requirements for a product or process. Codes can be, and often are, adopted as laws
Defect A discontinuity or imperfection that renders a part of the product or the entire product unable to meet minimum acceptable standards or specifications
Discontinuity A change or break in the shop or structure of a part that may or may not be considered a defect, depending on the code
Embrittled Metal that has been made brittle and that will tend to crack with little bending.
Essential Variable Items in a welding procedure specification (WPS) that cannot be changed without requalifying the WPS
Hardenable Materials Metals that have the ability to be made harder by heating and then cooling
Homogeneity The quality or state of having a uniform structure or composition throughout.
Inclusion Foreign matter introduced into and remaining in a weld
Laminations Cracks in the base meta formed when layers separate
Non-essential Variable Items in a welding procedure specification (WPS) that can be changed without requalifying the WPS
Notch Toughness The ability of a material to absorb energy in the presence of a flaw such as a notch
Procedure Qualification Record The document containing the results of the nondestructive and destructive testing required to qualify a WPS
Radiographic Describes images made by passing X-rays or gamma rays through an object and recording the variations in density on photographic film
Specification A document that defines in detail the work to be performed or the materials to be used in a product or process
Standard A document that defines how a code is to be implemented
Transducer A device that converts one form of energy to another
Underbead Cracking Cracking in the base metal near the weld, but under the surface
Welding Procedure Qualification The demonstration that welds made following a specific process can meet prescribed standards
Supplemental Essential Variable The variables that must be considered when notch toughness requirements are involved

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
