subscript a subscript is a number written to the right of a chemical symbol and slightly below
Ionic Bond the force of attraction between positive and negative ions
covalent bond a pair of shared electrons between two atoms is called a covalent bonds - elements that are hear each other - weaker than ionic bonds, can be broken easily
polar covalent bonds a covalent bond in which the electron are shared unequally
molecule a group of atoms held together by covalent bonds
metallic bonds the equal sharing allows the electrons to move easily among the atoms.
What are 3 forms of carbon? diamond, graphite, fullerene
Why does a mixture of sodium and chloride and water conduct electricity but a sodium chloride crystal does not? sodium chloride is an ionic bond so it needs water to conduct electricity, water has minerals but sodium chloride doesn't have minerals so it needs water to conduct electricity.
What are most substances? compounds
When does an atom become a positive ion? loses an electron to another atom. Will give up or take along with its charge. Lewis dot structure. Use periodic table. Atoms with 4 valence cango either way
