indications of Albuterol? Bronchospasm, Anaphylaxis, hyperkalemia
contraindications of Albuterol? Hypersensitivity
dose of Albuterol? Bronchospasm: 2.5 mg/3 mL's via SVN q15-20 mins. Hyperkalemia: 10-20 mg via LVN over 15 minutes
What is the pharmacodynamics of Activated Charcoal? Binds and adsorbs toxic substances in the digestive tract
Indications of Activated Charcoal? Most oral poisonings/overdoses
contraindications of Activated Charcoal? ↓ LOC, OD of corrosives, caustics, petroleum substances
Dose of Activated Charcoal? PO: 1-2 g/kg
Pharmacodynamics of Aspirin? Blocks Cyclooxygenase (an enzyme that is basically an alarm for the body). COX acts upon Arachidonic Acid which in turn generates Thromboxane A2, a compound that regulates the activation of platelets to form a clot.
Indications of Aspirin? Cardiac signs/symptoms with ischemic etiology / suspected MI
Contraindications of Aspirin? Allergy to medication. Bronchospasm, Angioedema.
Dose for Aspirin? 160-325 mg PO of non-enteric coated ASA.
Pharmacodynamics of Dextrose 50% Electrolyte / Carbohydrate. Water-soluble monosaccharide
Indications of Dextrose 50% Correction of hypoglycemia
Contraindications of Dextrose 50% Known hyperglycemia
Dose for Dextrose 50% D50: 25 grams IV/IO, D10 in 50 mL (5 grams) IV/IO boluses (max 250 mL)
Pharmacodynamics for Epinephrine 1:1,000 and Epinephrine 1:10,000 Sympathetic agonist. Powerful α and ß agonist.
Indications for Epi 1:1,000 Severe bronchospasm, Allergies/anaphylaxis
Indications for Epi 1: 10,000 Cardiac arrest
Contraindications for Epi Few, weight risks vs benefits.
Dose for Epi 1:1,000 0.01 mg/kg IM (max 0.3 mg)
Dose for Epi 1:10,000 1 mg IVP/IOP q3-5 mins
Pharmacodynamics for Glucagon Hormone. Binds to Glucagon receptors and stimulates adenyal cyclase, which increases cAMP
Indications for Glucagon Hypoglycemia
Contraindications for glucagon Hypersensitivity
Dose for Glucagon 1 mg IM
Pharmacodynamics for Ipratropium (Atrovent) Anticholinergic. Selectively blocks muscarinic receptors.
Indications for Ipratropium (Atrovent) Bronchospasm associated with obstructive lung diseases (asthma, COPD)
Contraindications for Ipratropium (Atrovent) Hypersensitivity
Dose for Ipratropium (Atrovent) 500 mcg/2.5 mL via SVN
Pharmacodynamics of Narcan Opiate Antagonist
Indications for Narcan Suspected Opiate overdose with respiratory depression
Contraindications for Narcan Hypersensitivity
Dose for Narcan 0.4-2 mg IV/IO/IM/IN
Pharmacodynamics for Nitroglycerin Nitrate. Potent vasodilator that opens coronary vessels to improve blood flow to the myocardium. Decreases overall workload of the heart and afterload.
indications for Nitroglycerin Symptoms suggestive of myocardial ischemia, CHF.
Contraindications for Nitroglycerin Hypotension (SBP <90 mmHg), Severe bradycardia (<50 BPM), Tachycardia (>100 BPM), RVI, Use of phosphodiesterase inhibitors last 48 hours), Increased ICP.
Dose for Nitroglycerin 0.4 mg tablet or spray - repeat X 3 (q5 minutes) for a total max dose 1.2 mg.
Pharmacodynamic of Ondansetron (Zofran) Selective serotonin 5-HT3 receptor blocker.
Indications for Ondansetron (Zofran) Prevention and control of Nausea and/or vomiting.
Contraindications for Ondansetron (Zofran) Hypersensitivity
Dose for Ondansetron (Zofran) 4-8 mg IV slow push, IM, PO.
