| active range of motion | range of motion exercises completed by the resident without assistance |
| adaptive equipment | items such as eating utensils which are altered to make them easier to use by residents |
| adduction | movement towards body |
| ambulate | to walk or assist the resident to walk |
| atrophy | decrease in size and strength |
| body alignment | correct position of the body for good posture |
| contractures | shortening or contraction of muscle |
| exercise | physical activity or series of specific body movements designed to strengthen the body or parts of the body |
| extension | to straighten |
| external rotation | to rotate the joint away or outward |
| flexion | to bend |
| fowlers position | body position alignment of resident sitting in bed with the head of the bed is elevated to between 60-90 degrees |
| hemiplegia | paralysis of one side of the body |
| internal roation | to rotate the joint inward |
| paralysis | loss of ability to move a part or all of the body |
| paraplegia | loss of sensation of lower part of body or in both legs |
| PROM | exercises completed for residents who are paralyzed or unable to move on their own |
| pivot | turning motion |
| progressive mobilization | process that builds on activity steps which increase the residents abilities |
| quadriplegia | paralysis of all four of the extremities and the trunk |
| range of motion | moving body joints through their normal motion |
| rehabilitation | process in which the resident is assisted in reaching their highest level of ability physically, mentally, and emotionally |
| restorative care | nursing care that is planned to promote residents health and regain as much of independence as possible |
| semi-fowlers position | sitting in bed with the head raised to 30-45 degrees |
| side-lying position | laying on side in bed |
| supine position | laying on back |
| therapeutic tubing | hollow cylinders of tubes in our body (feeding tubes, etc.) |
| transfer | move from one surface or place to another |
| Aspiration | inhaling liquids into the lungs |
| CVA | cerebral vascular accident (stroke) |
| dehydration | lack of water or fluid in body |
| diet | food and fluids regularly consumed by a person as part of daily living |
| dietitian | person who has a degree in nutrition |
| dysphagia | difficulty swallowing |
| intake | all liquids consumed |
| nutrition | process by which the body takes in food and uses it for growth, repair, and maintenance of health |
| output | liquids that leave the body |
| puree | blended food |
