OMFP Hyperdontia Flashcards
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is hyperdontia? | Hyperdontia is a developmental abnormality that results in the development of supernumerary teeth. It has unilateral presentation as most commonly affects the maxillary permanent incisors, fourth molars, premolars, canines and laterals. |
| What causes hyperdontia? | Hyperdontia is multifactorial and arises from both genetic and environmental factors. |
| What are the main clinical features of hyperdontia? | Patients can have mesiodens (an extra tooth in the maxillary incisor region), distomolar/distodens (fourth molar), paramolor (posterior supernumerary tooth adjacent to erupted tooth) and/or dental transposition (teeth erupt in the wrong position) |
| What is Riga Frede disease? | Riga Frede disease occurs when early eruption of an extra tooth causes trauma to a baby while nursing and is most often seen on the tongue. |
| What is the difference between natal and para-natal teeth? | Natal teeth can be seen at birth, while para-natal teeth erupt within the first 30 days after birth. |
| What are some syndromes associated with hyperdontia? | Associated syndromes include: Angio-osteohypertrophy, cleidocranial dysplasia, curtius, Fabry-Anderson, Gardner, Hallerman-Streiff, Oral-facial-digital (type I), and Sturge-Weber syndrome. |
| What are some treatments for hyperdontia? | Hyperdontia does not require treatment in most cases, but extractions can be performed to remove the extra teeth. |
| True or False: The majority of supernumerary teeth will fail to erupt. | True - approximately 75% of supernumerary teeth developed as a result of hyperdontia will fail to erupt. |
