| figurative language | uses words in imaginative ways to reveal the nature of something by comparing unlike things |
| imagery | the mental pictures or sensations a writer creates through words |
| metaphor | compares two unlike things without using the words as, like, or resembles |
| sensory detail | words or phrases that appeal to one or more of the five senses |
| simile | compares two unlike things by using the word as, like, or resembles |
| personification | gives human qualities to things that are not human |
| describe | to explain or write about something so that it can be easily visualized |
| vivid | having clear images and strong details |
| adjectives | describing words; usually describes a noun |
