Sensory Details

Sensory Details, Imagery, Figurative Language Vocabulary

TermDefinition
descriptive language using details that help the reader to understand exactly what they would see, taste, touch/feel, hear, or smell if they were experiencing that moment (mind movie)
figurative language uses words in imaginative ways to reveal the nature of something by comparing unlike things
imagery the mental pictures or sensations a writer creates through words
metaphor compares two unlike things without using the words as, like, or resembles
sensory detail words or phrases that appeal to one or more of the five senses
simile compares two unlike things by using the word as, like, or resembles
personification gives human qualities to things that are not human
describe to explain or write about something so that it can be easily visualized
vivid having clear images and strong details
adjectives describing words; usually describes a noun
