These are terms and definitions that will help you with your vocabulary.

TermDefinition
Annex when you add a zero as a place holder to complete the operation
Quotient the answer to a division problem
Dividend (inside) number being broken
Divisor (outside) telling how many times to break apart
Reciprocal when you flip the numerator and denominator of a fraction
Integer whole numbers and their opposites
Property a rule or statement that is always true
Numerical Expression an expression that contains numbers and operations
Numerical Statement an equation that sets two expressions equal to each other
Algebraic Expression same as numerical, but uses variables( x, y, etc)
Constant number that stays the same and does not have a variable
Coefficient the number that relies on the variable
Ratio a comparison of 2 quantities of the same unit
Rate a ratio that compares 2 different units
Unit Rate a rate expressed in terms of 1 unit
Proportions an equation stating that 2 ratios are equivalent
Cross Products when you multiply diagonally across a proportion to prove proportionality
Rate of Change the ratio of output values to corresponding input values
Constant Rate of Change when the rate of change stays the same
Constant of Proportionality a rate of change that is proportional
Scale when you change the size of an object by a specific ratio
Scale Drawing a drawing that represents an object as an enlargement or reduction of the size of the actual object
Scale Factor the number used to multiply original dimensions by to shrink or enlarge
Percent a ratio that compares a number to 100 using the percent symbol
Sales Tax a percent of the sale added to the sale price of an item
Tip an optional payment to someone who provides good service
Commission a fee paid for services, usually a percent of the total cost
Markup a percent increase to the sale price of an item
Discount a percent decrease to the sale price of an item
Interest a percent added on to the total (usually a loan)
Complementary 2 angles whose measure, when added, equals 90
Supplementary 2 angles whose measure, when added, equals 180
Adjacent (touching) 2 angles that share a vertex and one common ray
Acute Angle an angle that is smaller than 90
Obtuse Angle an angle between 91 ans 179
Straight Angle exactly 180
Right angle exactly 90
Vertical Angle 2 angles that are at the same intersection but opposite sides
Interior Angles angles on inside of a figure
Similar Figures figures who's angles are congruent and corresponding sides are proportional
Congruent same size same shapes
Corresponding Parts same part, different shape
Indirect Objects objects that are not specifically related to each other, but can be used to find measurements
Composite Figure a figure made up of 2 or more smaller figures
Semi Circle half of a circle
Quarter Circle 1/4 of a circle
Lateral Area the sum of the lateral faces of a solid
Surface Area sum of ALL the faces, including the bases, of a solid
Volume the capacity of a 3-D object
Probability Experiment the process of observing an outcome when there is chance involved (cannot be sure of the outcome)
Probability the outcome of a probability experiment
Theoretical Probability probability determined from what variable or written description
Estimated Probability probability determined from actual, tested results
Complement (marked with an apostrophe after the parenthesis)
Comparing Probability the event that is most general will always have the greater probability
Sample Space for a probability experiment is the set of all possible outcomes
Tree Diagram is a diagram that represents the total possible outcomes
Random Digits are digits arranges in random order
Simulation when an artificial process for generating an outcome is substituted for probability
Population the whole group you are interested in learning about
Census is a study where data is collected from everyone in the whole population
Sample a small part that is representative of the whole
Sample Mean the average of the data for a sample
Population Mean the average of the data values for the WHOLE population
Random Sample a sample that is formed by selecting individuals from the population at random
Quartile 3 median of the upper half
Quartile 1 median of the lower half
Median (Quartile 2) middle number
Minimum lowest value
Maximum highest value
IQR (Inter Quartile Range) Quartile 3 minus Quartile 1
Range max minus the min
