Why do you think no great empires developed in North America? There were many different groups that developed in different regions of North America and used the available resources in their environment, which in some cases were limited so they had to trade with other groups to live.
Of what value would a political alliance be to an individual tribe? It would provide protection from enemies.
What artificial symbols are used by nations or organizations in a way similar to totems? Flags, mascots, religious signs
How did the environment affect the development of cultures on the Northwest Coast and of the Southwest? The cultures on the Northwest Coast relied on the sea for the resources they needed, while the cultures of the Southwest used irrigation to grow crops because the environment was very dry.
Why was the potlatch important? It was a ceremonial feast that allowed people to display their rank and prosperity.
What does the ability to construct complex buildings reveal about a society? Workers had to be available for more than raising food and had to be highly organized and skilled in construction of larger buildings.
How are math, astronomy, and calendars related? Calendars are based on astronomical observations and are recorded in mathematical terms.
Why did the Maya civilization decline? Warfare among Maya city-states; invasions by neighboring peoples; population growth and overfarming
What were the major characteristics of Maya civilization? Urban centers, religiosity, calendars, codices/writing, city-states
What is a glyph? A symbolic picture, one used as a part of a writing system for carving messages in stone.
Why might the followers of the war god rebel against Topiltzin? They did not wish to worship a different god; perhaps they feared the wrath of the war god if they did not worship him.
How were the Aztecs’ methods of controlling the empire like those of other empires you have read about? Most other empires demanded some sort of tribute. Also, some other empires allowed locals to rule if the tribute was paid. As with the Aztecs, failure to pay was severely punished.
How strong do you think the economy of the Aztec Empire was, based on the description of Tenochtitlán? The Aztec economy was strong because Tenochtitlán was thriving and the market brought many different people and goods to the empire.
Why did the Aztecs take so many war captives? They were needed for sacrifice to the gods.
Why would cutting the number of government officials reduce the need for tribute money? They would not need to be paid.
Do you think that Pachacuti’s methods for unifying conquered lands were effective? Explain. Yes, because people were allowed to keep their own customs and language, and that gave them a sense of identity.
Of all of the methods used to create unity, which do you think would be most successful? Why? Probably the strongest answer is language. It allowed easy communication throughout the empire.
How were the Inca and Aztecs alike? Religion, theocracy, and a united culture that was loyal to the emperor played an important role in their civilizations.
Do you think that splitting the Incan Empire led to its fall? Explain. Yes, because unity kept the empire together before it was split.
How did the Inca unify the people they conquered? Small administrative units, roads, mail system, schooling, trade, official language, taxation
