สูตรเอมพิริกัล (Emphirical formula) สูตรอย่างง่าย เป็นสูตรที่แสดงองค์ประกอบของธาตุที่ประกอบกันเป็นสารประกอบในอัตราส่วนอย่างต่า เช่น CH2O เป็นสูตรเอมพิริกัลของกลูโคสซึ่งมีสูตรโมเลกุล C6H12O6
สูตรโมเลกุล (Molecular formula) สูตรที่แสดงจานวนอะตอมของธาตุองค์ประกอบที่มีอยู่ใน 1 โมเลกุลของสาร เช่น สูตรโมเลกุลของเอทานอล (C2H6O) หรือ สูตรโมเลกุลของกลูโคส (C6H12O6)
สูตรโครงสร้าง (Structural formula) สูตรที่แสดงการจัดเรียงอะตอมของธาตุองค์ประกอบที่มีอยู่ในโมเลกุลซึ่งแสดงให้เห็นถึงการเชื่อมต่อของอะตอมต่างๆ ในสารประกอบ เช่น สูตรโมเลกุลของเอทานอล (CH3CH2OH) และสูตรโมเลกุลของกรดแอซีติก (CH3COOH)
