Elements of plot

TermDefinition
Plot The series of actions and events that take place in a story
Exposition Provides readers with the background information they need to understand the story. Exposition introduces the characters and setting.
Rising Action Things begin to happen; the conflict is introduced; and the tension builds.
Climax The moment of greatest tension in the conflict, and the turning point of the story
Falling Action The consequences of the protagonist's decision or action play out, and the conflict is finally decided.
Resolution The unfinished parts of the plot are resolved, and the story comes to its conclusion.
Narrative A story
Character Any person appearing in a story
Protagonist The main character in a story
Antagonist The character who causes conflict for the protagonist
