Cation A positively charged ion
Anion A negatively charged ion
Ionic bond A complete transfer of valence electrons between atoms. Usually a metal and nonmetal
Molecular bond/covalent bond Sharing of electron pairs betweens atoms Non-metal and non-metal Can be reduced down to a single molecule and be stable
Colloid A suspension of particles in water that does not settle out over time
Spectroscopy Interaction of light and matter
Fullerene An allotrope of carbon that forms closed or partially closed meshes. Ie: buccyballs
Allotrope Different physical forms in which an element can exist. Graphite/charcoal/diamond
Heterogeneous mixture Mixture where different materials can be easily distinguished. Orange juice/blueberry muffin/opened soda
Homogeneous mixture An evenly blended mixture/uniform composition Gasoline/unopened soda/water
Tyndall effect Scattering of light by colloidal particles
Mass number Number of protons and neutrons in an isotope
Groups Vertical columns on periodic table
Periods Horizontal rows of elements
Polyatomic ion
Positively or negatively charged group of covalent bonded particles
Ion Atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to gaining or losing electrons
