Forces and Motion Vocabulary

| Acceleration | A change in speed or direction of an object's motion (a car going slower or faster or turning or backing up ) |
| Force | A push or pull (being pushed on a swing or pulled in a wagon) |
| Gravity | The force of attraction between Earth and other objects. (a ball thrown up in the air will come back down) |
| Inertia | The property of matter that keeps a moving object moving in a straight line. |
| Gravitation | A force that acts between all masses and causes them to attract one another. (keeps the moon orbiting around Earth and Earth orbiting the Sun) |
| Friction | A force that resists motion, relative to each other, of objects that are touching. (tires on a road, sneakers on wood) |
| Speed | The change of position during a unit of time. (a merry-go-round goes at a slow speed) |
| Velocity | The speed and direction of an object. (a car going north at 55 mph) |
| Weight | A measure of the gravitational force acting on an object. |
| Motion | A change of position of an object. |
