Year 9 Equations

Definitions and Facts from the NSW Year 9 Equations and Inequations Topic

TermDefinition
equation a statement that two quantities are equal
solve to find the answer to a problem
formula an equation showing the relation between variables.
variable a quantity represented by a symbol (usually a letter) that can be any of a range of values
inverse another word for opposite
inequality a statement that two quantities are not equal
linear equation an equation where the highest power of the variable is 1
backtracking a process used to solve an equation by undoing what has been done to the variable in the equation.
subject of the formula stands alone on the left-hand side of the equality sign.
pronumeral another name for Variable
substitute putting values where the letters or symbols are
solution a value, or values, we can put in place of a variable (such as x) that makes the equation true.
