| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Neap tide | occurs at the first and third (last) quarter Moon phases; the Sun is at a right angle to the Moon |
| Spring tide | occurs at the full and new Moon phases; Earth, Moon, and Sun are in alignment pulling the water in the same direction |
| Tide | the rising and falling of the oceans due to the gravitational attraction of the Moon and Sun; usually occurs twice each day |
| Tidal ranges | the difference between levels of ocean water at high tide and low tide |
| Tides | the daily movements of ocean water that change the level of the ocean's surface |
| high tides | highest tides due to the pull of gravity from the moon on Earth's water |
| low tides | lowest tides due to the pull of gravity from the moon on Earth's water |
| neap tides | tides with minimum daily tidal range that occur during the first and third quarter moon phases; occur when the sun, Earth, and moon form a 90 degree angle. |
| spring tides | tides with maximum daily tidal range that occur during the new and full moons and when the sun, Earth, and moon are in alignment with one another |
