Plate Tectonics & CF

TermDefinition
Asthenosphere the soft layer of the mantle on which pieces of the lithosphere float
convergent boundary the boundary between two colliding tectonic plates
divergent boundary the boundary between two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other
inner core the solid dense center of our planet that extends from the bottom of the outer core to the center of the Earth
lithosphere the outermost rigid layer of Earth that consists of the crust and the rigid upper mantle
mantle the layer of Earth between the crust and the core
ocean ridge a long mountain chain that forms on the ocean floor where tectonic plates pull apart
mid-ocean ridge a long mountain chain that forms on the ocean floor where tectonic plates pull apart
outer core the liquid layer of Earth's core that lies beneath the mantle
Plate tectonic theory the outermost layer of the Earth (lithosphere) is divided into contiguous sections (plates) that move relative to each other causing continental drift, seafloor spreading, and the formation of major physical features of the Earth’s surface
subduction zone the region where two plates collide and one plate sinks below the other; Usually an oceanic plate sinks below a continental plate and down into the asthenosphere at a convergent boundary
transform boundary the boundary between two tectonic plates that are sliding past each other horizontally
sea-floor spreading the process by which new oceanic lithosphere is created at mid-ocean ridges as older material is pulled away from the ridges

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
