Geometry Terms

angle a shape formed by two rays that share the same endpoint
closed shape a two-dimensional shape that begins and ends at the same point
line a straight path extending in both directions with no endpoints
open shape a shape that does not begin and end at the same point
plane shape a shape on a flat surface that is formed by curves, lines segments, or both
point an exact position or location
polygon a closed plane shape with straight sides
ray a part of a line, with one endpoint, that is straight and continues in one direction
right angle an angle that forms a square corner
two-dimensional shape plane shapes that have length and width.
acute angle an angle less than a right angle
obtuse angle an angle greater than a right angle
quadrilateral a 4 sided shape
pentagon a 5 sided shape
hexagon a 6 sided shape
octagon an 8 sided shape
decagon a 10 sided shape
intersecting lines lines that cross or meet and form angles
perpendicular lines lines that cross or meet to form RIGHT angles
parallel lines lines that NEVER cross and will not form any angles
rectangle a 4 sided shape with 2 pairs of sides that are the same length and 4 right angles
square 4 sides that are the same length and 4 right angles.
rhombus 2 pairs of opposite sides that are parallel and 4 sides that are of equal length.
trapezoid exactly 1 pair of opposite sides that are parallel.
congruent being the same size and shape
right triangle a triangle that has one right angle
acute triangle a triangle that has all acute angles
obtuse triangle a triangle that has one obtuse angle
parallelogram a quadrilateral with 2 sets of parallel sides. opposite sides are congruent.
