Middle school math vocabulary

| Inverse operation | The operation that will "undo" what is being done. |
| Linear | Any set of data that can be modeled with a straight line. |
| Point of intersection | The point on a graph where two lines cross. This is where both lines are equal. |
| Rate | A ratio that compares two different units, where one of the two units is equal to one. |
| Slope | A ratio that compares the change in the vertical axis to the change in the horizontal axis. (Rise over the run) |
| Steepness | How vertical a line is on a linear graph. |
| Substitution | Replacing a variable with a number in an equation. |
| Term | A number, a variable, a number multipled by a variable, or a number divided by a variable in an expression or equation. |
| Y-intercept | The point on a graph where the line crosses the y-axis. |
| Algorithm | An explicit step by step procedure for producing a solution to a given problem. |
| Coefficient | A number that is multiplied by a variable in an equation. |
| Constant | A number that is added or subtracted in an equation. |
| Distributive property | Multiplying a number or variable with the other numbers or variables inside parentheses. |
| Expression | Term or combo of terms without an =, <, > sign. |
| Function | Two variable that share a relationship where every value of "x" will create a unique value of "y". |
| Golden rule of equations | A rule that states that whatever you do to one side of any the equation, you must do the same thing to the other side of the equation. |
| Inequality | Lack of being equal. Two quantities can be less than, greater than, less than or equal, greater than or equal. |
