Chem Unit 3 Vocab

Electron-Dot Notation The Lewis dot notation consists of the kernel and the valence electrons represented by dots.
Nomenclature A set of rules to generate systematic names for chemical compounds.
Polar Covalent A chemical bond in which the electrons required to form a bond is unequally shared between two atoms.
Covalent bond Is a chemical bond that involves the sharing of electron pairs between atoms.
Oxidation # A number assigned to an element in chemical combination which represents the number of electrons lost by an atom of that element in the compound.
Metallic Bond The chemical bonding that holds the atoms of a metal together.
Nonpolar Covalent Are a type of bond that occurs when two atoms share a pair of electrons with each other.
Polyatomic Ion Is a charged chemical species composed of two or more atoms covalently bonded or of a metal complex that can be considered to be acting as a single unit.
Ionic Bond Is when a positively charged ion forms a bond with a negatively charged ions and one atom transfers electrons to another.
Stock Sytem In the Stock system, the oxidation states of some or all of the elements in a compound are indicated in parentheses by Roman numerals.
Octet Rule States that every atom wants to have eight valence electrons in its outermost electron shell.
