| convention | characteristic of a literary genre that's understood and accepted by audiences because i has come through usage and time to be reconized as a familiar technique |

| tone | attitude of the writer toward the subject of character |
| irony | statement that initially appears contradictory but then, on closer inspection, turns out to make sense |
