author's style The author’s style is the manner of writing - how something is said rather than what is said.
formal style Uses complex language and sentence structure
informal style Uses simpler language, sentences and fragments
figurative language An imaginative use of words to express ideas that are not literally true but that are meaningful adn can have an emotional impact
allusion A reference to a famous person, place or work of literature.
simile a comparison of two unlike things using the word like or as
metaphor a comparison of two unlike things that have qualities in common, without using like or as
personification the giving of human qualities to an animal, object, or idea
alliteration the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words.
onomatopoeia the use of words whose sounds echo their meanings.
