expanded form a way to write numbers by showing the value of each digit 253 = 200 + 50 + 3
standard form a way to write numbers by using the digits 0-9 34, 530
word form a way to write numbers by using words
round to replace a number with another number that tells about how many or how much
estimate a number that is close to an exact amount
inverse operations operations that undo each other, such as addition and subtraction, or multiplication and division
Distributive Property The property that states that multiplying a sum by a number is the same as multiplying each addend by the number and then adding the products. 5 x (100 + 60 + 4) = (5 x 100) + (5 x 60) + (5 x 4)
Factor A number that is multiplied by another number to find a product.
Product The answer to a multiplication problem.
Sum The answer to an addition problem
Difference The answer to a subtraction problem
Partial product A method of multiplying in which the ones, tens, hundreds, and so on are multiplied separately and then the products are added together.
Associative Property of Multiplication The property that states that you can group factors in different ways and still get the same product. 3 x (4 x 2) = (3 x 4) x 2
Commutative Property of Multiplication The property that states that when the order of the two factors is changed, the product is the same. 3 x 5 = 5 x 3
dividend The number that is to be divided in a division problem.
divisor The number that divides the dividend.
quotient The answer , not including the remainder, that results from dividing
remainder The amount left over when a number cannot be divided equally
multiple The product of a number and a counting number is called a ___________________ of the number.
compatible numbers Numbers that are easy to compute mentally. 176 divided by 8 - 160 is easy to compute mentally- 160 divides easily by 8
common factor A number that is a factor of tow or more numbers. 2 is a common factor of 6 and 8.
common multiple A number that is a multiple of two or more numbers.
divisible A number is __________________ by another number if the quotient is a counting number and the remainder is zero. 18 is ______________________ by 3
pattern An ordered set of numbers or objects; the order helps you predict what will come next
prime number A number that has exactly two factors: 1 and itself
composite number A number that has more than two factors
term A number or object in a pattern
