ELA Parts of Speech

Vocabulary related to the parts of speech

TermDefinition
noun a person, place, thing or idea
verb a word used to describe an action, state or occurrence
adjective describes a quality of a person, place or thing
adverb describes a verb, an adjective or another adverb (many end in -ly)
helping verb helps the main verb show past, present or future tense (I have run ... have is a helping verb)
linking verb connects the subject to the verb to tell more information (we are able... are is a linking verb)
pronoun used to replace a noun in a sentence
singular noun refers to one person, place or thing
plural noun refers to two or more people, places or things
common noun a regular person, place or thing
proper noun the name of a specific person, place or thing and begins with a capital letter
possessive noun a noun that shows ownership over something
conjunction joins together phrases, clauses, and sentences
interjection used to express emotion or to interrupt a part of a sentence
preposition shows where one noun is in relation to another
