Geometry Vocabulary

Vocabulary for Unit 5: Geometry (Grade 6)

TermDefinition
Area The size of a flat surface calculated by measuring the length and width.
Parallelogram A quadrilateral with opposite sides parallel and opposite sides congruent.
Quadrilateral A closed figure having four sides and four angles.
Triangle A figure with three sides and three angles.
Trapezoid A quadrilateral with one pair of parallel lines.
Parallel Lines in a plan that never intersect.
Composite Figure A figure made of triangles, quadrilaterals, semicircles, and other two-dimensional figures.
Face A flat surface.
Edge The outer or furthest point of something.
Vertex The point where three or more faces intersect.
Volume The amount of space inside a three-dimensional figure. Volume is measured in cubic units. V + lwh
Surface Area The sum of the area of all the surfaces (faces) of a three-dimensional figure. SA= 2lh + 2lw + 2hw
Net A two-dimensional figure that can be used to build a three-dimensional figure.
Polygon A simple closed figure formed by three or more straight line segments.
Coordinate Plane A plane in which a horizontal number line and a vertical number line intersect at their zero points.
Ordered Pair A pair of numbers used to locate a point on the coordinate plane. The ordered pair is written in the form (x,y)
