| allusion | a reference to a person, place, or event which the author believes the reader will be familiar |
| characterization | the techniques a writer uses to create and develop a character |
| hyperbole | an extreme exaggeration |
| metaphor | comparing two unlike things with a similar quality w/out like or as |
| onomatopoeia | words that echo their meaning- hiss, buzz |
| personification | giving an inanimate object/ animal human characteristics |
| short story | a story that can be read in one sitting |
| simile | comparing two things w/ like or |
| exposition | happens at the beginning of a story where the author establishes the setting, background and protagonist |
| Alliteration | the repetition of constant beginning sounds |
