Math study vocabulary

TermDefinition
Distributive Properties The property that terms in an expression may be expanded in a particular way to form an equivalent expression.
Substitution A person or thing acting or serving in place of another.
Term A mathematical expression of the form like numbers or letters and x and y.
Variables A quantity or function that may assume any given value or set of values.
Equivalent Of two sets able to be placed in one-to-one correspondence.
Exponent A symbol or number placed above and after another symbol or number to denote the power to which the latter is to be raised
Constant A quantity assumed to be unchanged throughout a given discussion
Coefficient a number or quantity placed (generally) before and multiplying another quantity, as 3 in the expression 3 x.
Factor To express (a mathematical quantity) as a product of two or more quantities .
Quotient A result of division; the number of times one quantity is contained in another.
Product A substance obtained from another substance through chemical change.
Sum The limit of the sequence of partial sums of a given infinite series.
