How did the monarchy get stronger in France? Cardinal Richelieu increased to power of the Crown and decreased the power of the nobles.
How did Louis XIV make sure he kept his power? Louis XIV kept the nobles out of his government and gave more power to the government officials who reported him.
How did Louis XIV bring disaster to France? Louis XIV spent too much money on wars and, along with Spain, lost land after the War of the Spanish Succession.
How did Henry of Navarre end the crisis and restore order? Converted to Catholic and issued Edict of Nantes, which declared that Huguenots could live in peace in France and set up their own houses of worship in certain cities; devoted his reign to rebuilding France and it's prosperity.
How did Cardinal Richelieu strengthen the France monarchy? Forbade Protestant cities from having walls; weakened power of nobles by ordering them to take down their fortified castles and by increasing power of government agents.
What effect did the religious wars have on French intellectuals? Turned them to skepticism, the idea that nothing can be known for certain, and led them to question church doctrine, which claimed to be the only truth.
What steps did Jean Baptiste Colbert take to turn France into an economic power? Followed a strict policy of mercantilism by taking steps to make France self-sufficient, expanding and protecting French industries, and encouraging migration to France's colony of Canada, where the fur trade would add to French commercial strength.
In what ways did Louis XIV support the arts? Popularized opera and ballet, supported writers such as Moliere, promoted art that glorified the monarchy and supported absolute rule.
Why did Louis fail in his attempts to expand the French empire? His many enemies combined forces in the League of Augsburg and thereby became strong enough to stop France.

The development of the constitutional monarchy, the Bill of Rights, and the Establishment of a cabinet all gave Parliament more power.
To what extent did anti- Protestantism contribute to Louis XIV’s downfall? Cancelling the Edict of Nantes cost France many skilled workers, and wars against Protestant countries damaged the French economy.
How did the policies of Colbert and Louis XIV affect the French economy?Explain both the positive and negative effects. Positive - Built up and protected French industries. Negative - Drove out Huguenots and overspent on buildings and wars.
What was the result of the War of the Spanish Succession? France and Spain were not allowed to unite,Britain gained control of Gibraltar, and the Austrian Hapsburgs took the Spanish Netherlands.
Many historians think of Louis XIV as the perfect example of an absolute monarch. Do you agree ? Explain why or why not? Agree - He controlled the economy, regulated worship, weakened the nobility, and built a magnificent palace to show his power.
What impact did the French religious wars likely have on French thinkers? It turned French thinkers toward skepticism.
