How do American political parties compare with parties in most other industrialized democracies? Different number of parties, party id's, and party influence
What is Realignment? The electorate somewhat changes.
What are characteristics of Realignment? Enduring shifts in party control, changes in platform parties, Expansion in electorate, politics have to change the way things are conducted. (40-50 years)
What is Dealignment? People don't care about the parties
What are the effects of Dealignment? Divided Government, Voter indifference/demobilization, Power of incumbency, Increased role of third parties/ independents.
Why does America have a two-party system? Party in the electorate (voters), Party Organization (work for the party), Party in government (Republican or Democratic)
What is Duverger’s Law? Single-member districts tend to favor a two-party system.
What is a Caucus? Voting happening at one time, show up at a designated time. People campaign for their candidate of choice. Involve public voting; often by physically moving around the room.
What is a Closed Primary? Voters must register with a political party before election day.
What is the Pros of a Closed Primary? Prevents "raiding", register in advance, Results in more informed voters; requires them to do research, Picks nominee that is most reflective of party values/ beliefs. Only registered party voters are voting.
What are Cons of Closed Primary? Limits voters choice, potentially decreases turnout. Shut out independents
What is a Open Primary? Voters are given the option to either choose to vote Republican or Democrat
Pros of an Open Primary? Higher participation/ turnout; one fewer barriers than others who have to chose prior to election day. More independent participation, More voter choice/ freedom.
What is the primary purpose of modern party conventions? To win
Who are the delegates? Selected from local elections
Who are super delegates? National officers selected by chairperson of the party who is free to vote for anyone at the convention.
What are the major types of 3rd parties in America? Independents, Green Party
What role do they play in American politics? Influence who wins, force other parties to adapt, get others voter to vote, make major parties take care of problems.
What are the major characteristics of the formal structure of the major parties? (National/state & local) Super delegates, delegates, committee, chairperson
What are the main functions of political parties? What is their primary focus? Raise money, mobilize voters, "check" on other parties, inform voters, recruit candidates, governing. TO WIN!!!!
