| supernova | a stellar explosion that briefly outshines an entire galaxy. |
| retina | is continuous with the optic nerve, and consists of several layers, one of which contains the rods and cones that are sensitive to light. |
| intuitive | having the ability to know or understand something without evidence |
| neural | anything that is neural is related to the nervous system |
| neuroscientist | a person who studies the brain and the nervous system |
| spectators | the people who are watching the event |
| neurons | a nerve cell |
| illusion | something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality |
| neuroscience | any of the sciences that study the nervous system |
| cynic | a person who has negative opinions about the other people and what they do |
| misdirection | the practice of diverting the spectator’s attention away from a secret action |
| text features | elements of a text that help organize and call attention to important information. |
| titles | the name that is attached to a piece of writing |
| headings | also known as the title of a piece of writing |
| subheadings | appear at the beginning of sections within the text and indicated the focus of that section |
| boldface type | dark, heavy print that is used to draw attention to unfamiliar vocabulary |
| footnotes | appear at the bottom of the page and provide definitions or additional information about terms in the text |
| graphic aids | maps, charts, diagrams, graphs and pictures that are visual text features that can help you understand ideas or processes |
| technical language | terms used in a specialized field such as science or technology |
| anecdote | a brief account of an event |
| summarize | briefly retell the central ideas in your own words |
| objective summary | reports what the writer intended, without opinions or unnecessary details |
