Basic vocabulary for the start of chemistry.

| Organic chemistry | chemistry of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen |
| Inorganic chemistry | chemistry of compounds made of metals and nonmetals |
| Physical chemistry | chemistry in terms of laws of physics |
| Analytical chemistry | separating, identifying, quantifying matter |
| Biochemistry | chemistry of living organisms |
| Theoretical chemistry | using mathematical models to predict structure of compounds |
| Microscopic | small |
| macroscopic | big |
| measurements | number and unit |
| scientific method | problem solving |
| quantitative observation | includes numbers |
| qualitative observation | qualities like color, scent, etc |
| theory | explanation based on observations and investigations |
| natural law | statement about what happens in nature and that seems to be true all the time |
| experiment law | collecting data to test hypothesis |
| matter | anything with mass and takes up space |
| atoms | fundamental units of which elements are made |
| element | one type of atom (cannot be separated simpilar) |
| allotope | same element, different physical form |
| compounds | atoms of different elements chemically combined to form new substance |
| molecule | a collection of atoms bonded together that behaves as a unit |
| solid | fixed shape and volume |
| liquid | fixed volume, change shape |
| gas | no volume or shape |
| physical property | change without the substance becoming something else |
| physical change | change that doesn't affect the composition of the substance |
| chemical property | ability of a substance to change to a different substance |
| chemical change | change in which new substance is formed |
| mixture | substances added together without a chemical change |
| alloy | solid mixture with matalic properties |
| pure substances | either a pure element or compound |
| homogeneous mixture | mixture same throughout |
| heterogeneous mixture | mixture different throughout |
| distillation | separation process that depends on different boiling points of the substance |
| filtration | separation of a solid from a liquid using filter paper |
