expanded form | a number written out as a sum of the place value of its digits |
trillions | a place value or period of place values for numbers greater than billions |
base | a number multiplied by itself the number of times shown by an exponent |
power | the number of times a base number is multiplied by itself |
exponential form | when a number is written with a base and an exponent |
decimal | a number with one or more digits to the right of the decimal point |
variable | a quantity that changes or varies, often represented with a letter |
coefficient | the number that is multiplied by a variable in an algebraic expression |
algebraic expression | a mathematical phrase that has at least one variable and one operation |
Commutative Property of Addition or Multiplication | the properties that state that the order of the addends or the order of factors does not affect the sum or product |
Associative Property of Addition or Multiplication | the properties that state that the way in which addends or factors are grouped does not affect the sum or product |
Identity Property of Addition or Multiplication | the properties that state that the sum of any number and zero is that number and the product of any umber and one is that number |
order of operations | a set of rules mathematicians use to determine the order in which operations are performed |
Distributive Property | multiplying a sum by a number produces the same result as multiplying each addend by the number and adding the products |
