Addition Property of Equality | if you add the same number to both sides of an equation, the two sides will remain equal |
Division Property of Equality | if you divide both sides of an equation by the same number, the two sides will remain equal |
Identity Property of Addition | when you add zero to a number, the result is that number |
inequality | a mathematical sentence that contains the symbol <, >, ≤, ≥, or ≠ |
algebraic expression | an expression that includes at least one variable |
equation | an algebraic or numerical sentence that shows that two quantities are equal |
Identity Property of Multiplication | states that the product of any number and 1 is that number |
inverse operations | opposite operations, or operations that undo each other, such as addition and subtraction or multiplication and division |
Multiplication Property of Equality | if you multiply both sides of an equation by the same number, the two sides will remain equal |
solution of an equation | a value that, when substituted for the variable, makes an equation true |
Subtraction Property of Equality | if you subtract the same number from both sides of an equation, the two sides will remain equal |
reciprocal | two numbers whose product equals 1 |
solution of an inequality | a value that, when substituted for the variable, makes an inequality true |
variable | a letter or symbol that stands for an unknown number or numbers |
