How did the Dutch gained control of much of India ocean trade? Became a great naval power allied with England to break Portuguese controls of trade and then drove English out of region.

How did the Spanish treat the people they conquered? They intermarried, impose their culture in exploited Native American as laborer's.
What was unique about the Spanish colonization of the lands of New Mexico? Mainly priest explore and colonize much of the region.
What was long-term consequence of this action? Replacement of native Americans forced labor is enslavement of AfrIcans.
What did slaves consist of in the Atlantic slave trade? farmers, merchants, priests, soldiers; fathers and mothers, sons and daughters.
What caused the beginning of the Atlantic slave trade? when the natives started to die out they needed more people to work their land and for them so they brought in slaves.
what were the economies like in Africa during the Atlantic slave trade? -forced labor among slaves to enrich other parts of the world -labor of A. slaves built economies for many American colonies -their info. of agriculture contributed to growth of rice industry in English colonies.
What did Europeans rely on in the Atlantic slave trade? rulers and traders to seize captives in the interior and bring them to the coastal posts of fortresses.
What effect did the Atlantic Slave trade have on Africa? -slave raiders captured the strongest young-future leaders -divided Africans one from another -decline of some African states-disappearing people
What was the Columbian Exchange? The global transfer of foods, plants and animals during the colonization of the Americas.
What were the results of the Columbian Exchang? -corn and potatoes helped boost world population because inexpensive to grow, highly nutritious -disease from Europe killed many Native Americans -sugar led to riches and enslavement -potato led to dependence in Ireland, had to migrate during famine
What were the cause of the Commercial Revolution of the 1600's? -new wealth from the Americas+ dramatic growth in overseas trade prompted new business and trade practices in Europe during 16th and 17 centuries -dramatically changed economic atmosphere.
Why Capitalism grew in the 1600's in Europe? -govts. no longer sole owners of great wealth -private merchants making lots of money -merchants continued to invest their money in trade and oversees explorations, profits from investments made even more money, reinvested, business fluorished.
How did the economic changes that swept Europe during the age of American colonization affect European society? 1.Commercial Revolution spurred the growth of towns and the rise of the merchant class- merchants rose in status 2.increased the wealth of European nations.
