introduction to chemistry

QuestionAnswer
Chemistry... is the study of matter and the changes that it undergoes.
Matter... anything that has mass and takes up space.
Mass... is a measurement that reflects the amount of matter.
Weight... is a measure not only of the amount of the matter but also of the effect of the earths gravitational pull on that matter.
Scientific Method... is a systematic approach used in the scientific study, whether it is chemistry, biology, physics, or other sciences.
Qualitive Data... information that describes color, odor, shape, or some other physical characteristics.
Quantitive Data... numerical information.
Hypothesis... is a tentative explanation for what has been observed.
Experiement... is a set of controlled observations that test the hypothesis.
Independent Variable... a variable that you plan to change.
Dependent Variable... its value changes in response to a change in the independent variable.
Model... a visual, verbal, and/or mathematical explanation of experimental data.
Theory... an explanation that has been supported by many, many experiements.
Scientific Law... A relationship in nature that is supported by many experiements.
Applied Research... is research undertaken to solve a specific problem.
Technology... the practical use of scientific notation.
