# Go Math Ch 3 Vocab

TermDefinition
absolute value the distance of an integer from zero on a number line
coordinate plane a plane formed by a horizontal line called the x-axis and a vertical line called the y-axis
integers the set of whole numbers and their opposites
opposites two numbers that are the same distance, but in opposite directions, from zero on a number line
ordered pair a pair of numbers used to locate a point on a grid
origin the point where the two axes of a coordinate plane intersect; (0, 0)
quadrants the four regions of the coordinate plane separated by the x- and y-axes
rational number any number that can be written as a ratio a/b where a and b are integers and b does not equal 0
line of symmetry a line that divides a figure into two halves that are reflections of each other
line symmetry when a figure can be folded about a line so that its two parts match exactly
negative integer any integer less than zero
positive integer any integer greater than zero
x-axis the horizontal line on a coordinate plane
x-coordinate the first number in an ordered pair; tells the distance to move right or left from (0, 0)
y-axis the vertical number line on a coordinate plane
y-coordinate the second number in an ordered pair; tells the distance to move up or down from (0, 0)
