| Idiom | a group of words established by usage as having a meaning but not meant to be taken literally (It's raining cats and dogs!) |
| Pun | a joke showing the different possible meanings of a word |
| Cliche' | a phrase or opinion that is overused |
| Proverb | a saying stating a general truth or piece of advice |
| Simile example | I am as cold as a polar bear in the snow today! |
| Metaphor example | She is diamond shining on the stage. |
| Personification example | The stars winked at me in the dark sky. |
| Hyperbole example | I told you a million times to stop hitting me! |
