Chapter 2 Ecology

TermDefinition
Producer Producers are the source of food in an ecosystem.
Consumer An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms.
Herbivores A consumer that only eats plants.
Carnivores A consumer that only eats animals.
Omnivores A consumer that eats both animals and plants.
Scavenger A scavenger is a carnivore that feeds on the bodies dead organisms.
Decomposers Decomposers break down biotic waste and dead organisms and return the raw material to the ecosystem.
Food chain A food chain is a series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy.
Food web a food web consists of many overlapping food chains in a ecosystem.
energy pyramid Shows the amount of energy that moves from feeding level to another food web.
evaporation The energy for evaporation comes from the heat of the sun.
