Ecology Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Competition the struggle between organisms to survive as they attempt to use the same limited resource
Population all members of one species in a particular area
Community all the different populations of organisms that live together in an area.
Abiotic non-living parts of an ecosystem such as rocks, water, sun, oxygen and temperature
Biotic living parts of an ecosystem
Ecosystems the community of organisms that live in a particular area, along with their nonliving surroundings
Adaptations a behavior or physical characteristic that allows an organism to live successfully in its environment
Limiting Factors environmental conditions that cause populations to decrease
Food Chain a series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy
Producer an organism that can make its own food
Consumer an organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms
Decomposer an organism that breaks down wastes and dead organisms
Ecology the study of the interactions between organisms and their environment
Omnivore an organism that eats both plants and animals
Mutualism a relationship between two organisms where both organisms benefit
Commensalism a relationship between two organisms in which one is living with or on the other without causing it harm
Parasitism a relationship between two organisms in which one causes harm to the other
