Johnny Tremain

Apprentice An apprentice is a person learning a trade or art, especially one bound by a legal agreement to work for an employer for a certain length of time in return for instruction and maintenence, but little or no pay. EX: Johnny Tremain is an apprencice.
Parasitic Living off of another life form, not self-sustaining. EX: A tick living on a dog is parasitic.
Brackish Slightly salty. EX: The french fries were brackish.
Crucible Container in which metals, ores, etc. can be melted. EX: Dove gave Johnny a cracked crucible.
Pious Having or showing reverence for God; religious EX: The Lapham family was very pious.
Repousse Raised in relief by hammering on the reverse side of thin metal. EX: Mr. Lapham had to repousse the handles for the sugar basin.
Poultice A soft, moist mass of mustard,herbs, etc. applied to the body as a medicine. The doctor rubbed poultice on his paitent's body to heal it.
Illiterate Being unable to read and write; showing a lack of education. EX: Most poor families' children were illiterate.
Indolent Disliking work; lazy; idle EX: The boy was indolent on his first day of work.
Diffedent Lacking in self-confidence, shy EX: The girl felt diffedent compared to the models.
Assuage Calm or soothe; make less intense; make easier or milder. EX: The mother had to assuage her crying baby.
Nonchalance Cool unconcern; indifferent. EX: The girls were acting very nonchalantley in class.
Effigy An image or statue usually of a person; images burned or hanged to show dislike or contempt. EX: The burgaler's photo was an effigy.
Enigmatic Like a riddle, baffling, puzzling. EX: The word problem was enigmatic.
