Expressions and Equations

expression a mathematical phrase that can involve numbers, variables, and operations
numerical expression a mathematical expression that contains only numbers and operations
variable a symbol, usually a letter, that represents an unknown value
algebraic (variable ) expression a mathematical expression that has at least one variable
order of operations the order in which mathematical expressions are to be evaluated
evaluate a numerical expression using the order of operations find out how much the expression is worth
exponent (power) a number that tells how many times the base is used as a factor; power is another way of saying exponent
base the number that is used as a repeated factor in an exponential expression
coefficient anumber placed before the variable in an algebraic expression; the number is multiplied by the value of the variable
constant a term that contains only a number
term a number, a variable, or the product of a number and one or more variables
equivalent expressions expressions that have the same value; ex. 50-25 and 5 x 5
