| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| alkane | a saturated hydrocarbon that consists of only carbon and hydrogen atoms with single bonds between all the atoms |
| alkene | a hydrocarbon in which one or more double bonds link carbon atoms |
| alkyne | an unsaturated hydrocarbon that contains a triple bond between two carbon atoms |
| aromatic hydrocarbon | a compound that has a benzene ring or the type of bonding exhibited by benzene; most have distinct odors |
| cracking | the use of a catalyst or high temperatures in the absence of air to break down or rearrange large hydrocarbons |
| fractional distillation | the distillation of a mixture by the use of repeated vaporization-condensation cycles to increase the efficiency of separation |
| isomer | a compound with a structure different from another compound with the same formula |
| monomer | the individual, small units that make up a polymer |
| polymer | a large molecule that is made up of many smaller repeating units |
| reforming | the use of heat, pressure, and catalysts to convert large alkanes into other compounds, often aromatic hydrocarbons |
| saturated hydrocarbon | a hydrocarbon with all the carbon atoms connected to each other by single bonds |
| unsaturated hydrocarbon | a hydrocarbon that has one or more double or triple bonds between carbon atoms |
