decomposition | the name applied to a reaction where a compound breaks down into two or more simpler substances |
double displacement | a type of reaction in which the positive and negative portions of two ionic compounds are interchanged; at least one product must be water or a precipitate |
single displacement | a type of reaction in which one element takes the place of another in a compound |
synthesis | the name applied to a reaction in which two or more substances combine to form a single product |
