Term | Definition |

real number | All numbers that can be represented by points on the number line—that is, all rational and irrational numbers. |
integer | One number from the set of {…, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, …}. |
exponent (power) | A number that indicates how many times a factor is repeated. |
power | A number that indicates how many times a factor is repeated. |
order of operations | 1. Work separately above and below any fraction bar; 2. If grouping symbols such as parentheses ( ), brackets [ ], or absolute value bars | | are present, start with the intermost set and work outward; 3. Evaluate all powers, roots, and absolute values.; 4. Multiply or divide in order from left to right.; 5. Add or subtract in order from left to right. |
square root | The opposite of squaring a number; that is, the number b is a square root of a if b2 = a. |
absolute value | The distance between 0 and a number on the number line. |
