To study 7th grade avanced math, especially for Mr. Ring's class, at polo park.
Term | Meaning | Numerical example | Algebraic example | Explanation |
---|---|---|---|---|
Distributive Property | To distribute a number through parenthesis by multiplying it. | 6(3 + 9) = 18 + 54 | 8(x+7) = 8x + 56; 5x(7 + 9y) = 35x + 45xy | The parenthesis are to do first, but they also mean to multiply. If you multiply a number to each term inside, you get distributive property. |
Multiplication by -1 (sometimes shown as -) (a property of multiplication). | To invert the sign of a number. | (7 ) (-1) = -7; -(-9) = 9 | -(y) = -y; -(-x) = x | Because the negative sign means to invert the sign, the multiply. Anything time 1 is equal to 1, so just invert the sign when multiplying -1. |
Number sets | A set of numbers | Natural numbers = {1, 2, 3 ...} | x = {-3, -1, 0, 4, 6, 9, } | Number set explanation pending. |
Roots | Inverse of exponents, repeated division. | √9 = ±3 | √(x^2) = x | Roots explanation pending. |
Scientific Notation | A notation used by scientists for very big and very small numbers. | 8,920,000 = 8.92 * 10 ^ 6 | 3,000,000x = 3x * 10 ^6 | Scientific Notation explanation pending. |
Power | To multiply something by itself, in a computer represented usually by ^, but in paper written above & smaller than the base. | 6(6) = 6^2 | x(x) = x^2 | Power explanation pending. |
