TermDefinition
Compare to identify similarities in two or more items
Contrast to identify differences in two or more items
Topic Sentence a sentence that states the main idea of the paragraph. In an essay, it also makes a point and supports the thesis statement
Introduction the opening paragraph of the essay
Thesis Statement a sentence in the introduction of an essay that states the writer's position or opinion on the topic of the essay
Conclusion the ending of a paragraph or essay which brings it to a close and leaves an impression with the reader
Fiction writing that consists of imagined events (fake or make-believe)
Non-fiction writing that is based on facts or actual events (real)
Hook a compelling idea or statement designed to get the reader's attention in an introduction
Commentary an explanation of the way the facts, details, and/or examples in a paragraph or essay support the topic sentence
