TermDefinition
Noun person, place, thing, or idea
pronoun takes the place of a noun. personal, reflexive, relative, interrogative, demonstrative, indefinite
Adjective Modifies nouns and pronouns; tells which one?, how many?, what kind? articles and proper
Adverb modifies adjectives, verbs , and other adverbs; tells how?, when?, where?, to what extent?
Preposition shows relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence
Conjunction joins words, phrases and clauses: coordinating, subordinating, correlative, noun clause identifier, conjunctive adverb
Interjection expresses emotion but has no real connection with the rest of the sentence.
Verb shows action or helps to make a statement; action, linking, helping
Verbal word formed from a verb but acting as a noun, adjective, or adverb; gerund, participle, infinitive
Simple Subject the who or what of a verb
Complete Subject simple subject +modifier
Simple Predicate/ Verb in/transitive verb; transitive takes an object and are passive voice, intransitive does not and is always a linking verb
Complete predicate verb+modifier
Appositive noun or pronoun that follows and renames another noun or pronoun.
Appositive phrase noun or pronoun (along with modifiers)that follows and renames another noun or pronoun.
Prepositional Phrase groups of words beginning with preposition and with noun and pronoun
Object of Preposition follows preposition and tells"what?" or "whom?'
Noun of Direct Address person being spoken to in a sentence
Infinitive Phrase infinitive+modifier and object
Object of Infinitive follows infinitive and tells "what?'
Gerund Phrase gerund+modifier and object
Object of Gerund follows the gerund and tells "what?"
Participle Phrase participle+modifier and object
