Place Value
Term | Definition |

decimal number | A number worth less than one whole |
decimal point | The period that separates the whole from the decimal |
digit | Any numeral from 0-9 |
expanded form | Represents the value as a sum Ex. 5.75 = 5 + 0.7 + 0.05 |
expanded notation | Represents value as a sum where each digit is multiplied by its value Ex. 5.75 = (5 x 1) + (7 x 0.1) + (5 x 0.01) |
hundredth | A place worth 1/100 of a whole, represents pennies in money Ex. 0.05 = five hundredths |
numeral | Names a number |
period | A three digit grouping of numbers between commas, has a hundreds, tens, and ones place Ex. millions, thousands, units |
standard form | Represents a value using digits |
tenth | A place 1/10 of a whole, represents dimes in money Ex. 0.7 = seven tenths |
whole number | A set of counting numbers, includes zero |
word form | Represents a value using words Ex. 5.75 = five and seventy-five hundredths |
