|---|---|
| lateral face | In a prism, the faces that are not bases. In a pyramid, faces that intersect at the vertex. |
| lateral edge | In a prism, the intersection of two adjacent lateral faces. In a pyramid, lateral edges are the edges of the lateral faces that join the vertex to vertices of the base. |
| base edge | The intersection of the lateral faces and bases in a solid figure. |
| altitude | In a prism or cylinder, a segment perpendicular to the bases with an endpoint in each plane. In a pyramid and cone, the segment that has the vertex as one endpoint and is perpendicular to the base. |
| lateral area | For prisms, pyramids, cylinders, and cones, the area of the faces of the figure not including the bases. |
| axis | In a cylinder, the segment with endpoints that are centers of the bases. In a cone, the segment with endpoints that are the vertex and the center of the base. |
| composite area | The sum of the areas of the basic figures that a composite figure can be separated into. |
| regular pyramid | A pyramid with a base that is a regular polygon. |
| slant height | The height of the lateral side of a pyramid or cone. |
