Terminology

BCBA Independent Fieldwork, Pg. 66 - 75

TermDefinition
Positive Reinforcement (Cooper, 2007) Occurs when a behavior is followed immediately by the presentation of a stimulus that increases the future frequency of the behavior in similar conditions.
Negative Reinforcement (Cooper, 2007) The occurrence of a response produces the removal, termination, or postponement of a stimulus, which leads to an increase in the future occurrence of that response.
Differential Reinforcement (Cooper, 2007) Reinforcing one response class and withholding reinforcement for another.
Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior, DRO (Cooper, 2007) Deliver reinforcement whenever the problem behavior has not occurred for a specific time.
Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behavior, DRA (Cooper, 2007) Reinforce occurrences of desirable alternative to problem behavior but that is not necessarily incompatible alternative bx can occupy time that problem bx would ordinarily use alternative is usually functionally equivalent to problem bx.
Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible Behavior, DRI (Cooper, 2007) Two concurrent operants receive Sr at different rates. Reinforcing a behavior that cannot occur simultaneously with the problem behavior.
Differential Reinforcement of High Rates of Behavior, DRH (Cooper, 2007) A particular reinforcement schedule in which reinforcement is delivered for rates of responding ABOVE a specified predetermined criterion.
Differential Reinforcement of Low Rates of Behavior, DRL (Cooper, 2007) Sr whn no more than a criterion # of designated problem bx responses occur in a specific time period.
Unconditioned Reinforcer (Cooper, 2007) An unlearned reinforcer that is a function of evolutionary history. E.g. Water, food, sex, sleep, oxygen, warmth.
Conditioned Reinforcer (Cooper, 2007) A previously nuetral stimulus change that has acquired the capability to function as a reinforcer through stimulus - stimulus pairing with one or more conditioned reinforcers or unconditioned reinforcers.
Schedules of reinforcement and punishment (Cooper, 2007) A rule describing how, when, & why reinforcement or punishment will be delivered.
Automatic Reinforcement (Cooper, 2007) Reinforcement that occurs independent of the social mediation of others.
Automatic Punisher (Cooper, 2007) Punishment that occurs independent of the social mediation by others.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
