1. How are the accomplishments of the two dynasties similar? Both dynasties created a civil working government and built a very large empire; the Tang couldn’t control their empire though.
2. How did the Tang Dynasty benefit from the accomplishments of the Sui? The Sui dynasty made the Grand Canal, which created a necessary trade route to connect the northern cities and the southern Chang. This was a good base which allowed the Tang to grow.
3. What steps did the Tang take to restore China’s bureaucracy? They revived and expanded the civil service examination begun by the Han Dynasty.
4. Describe the urban social classes that emerged during the Tang and Song periods. The Song and Tang civil service exams created the gentry class which were the people who attained civil service positions.
5. What impact did improvements in transportation have on Tang and Song China? New roads and canals linked spurred internal trade. Ne sailing techniques expanded trade and cultural exchange with other nations.
6. “Gaining power depends on merit, not birth.” Do you agree with this view of China under the Tang and Song? Explain. Yes, because it shows their belief in the intelligence mattering and not just your family.
7. How do the feelings expressed in Tu Fu’s poem on page 326 still relate to life today? The feelings expressed in Tu Fu's poem is still related to life today because it relates to soldiers overseas.
8. What event would you consider the most important turning point in Japan’s early history? Why? When America came to Japan because it convinced them to open up and modernize. Japan became the great power that is known today.
9. Why were Japanese missions to tang China so important? This allowed Chinese customs to spread to Japan, especially Buddhism. Also, China was more developed than Japan was.
10. What was life like in the Heian court? Etiquette governed the lives of everyone living at court. Court life was very removed from Japan’s common people, referred to as "dwellers among the clouds."
11. What purpose did the samurai serve? They were bodyguards for local landlords

17. How did Srivijaya become wealthy and powerful? They taxed trade that passed through their waters
18. Why are there two sides to the development of Korean culture? One side of Korean tradition was developed through native traditions and the other was based on Chinese influences

Geography influences the history and culture of Southeast Asia and of Korea because, since they are near the pacific oceans so they can have better trade due to their sea trade

21. Why do you think that of all the cultures of Southeast Asia, Vietnam was the least influenced by India? I think that of all the cultures of Southeast Asia, Vietnam was the least influenced by India because Vietnam was so influenced by the Chinese
22. Who was Tang Taizong? He was the second emperor of the Tang Dynasty of China and his brilliant reign lasted from 626 to 649.
23. What was the Bushido code? It is the strict code of behavior followed by samurai warriors in Japan.
24. What was the Koryu Dynasty? It is a dynasty that ruled Korea from A.D. 935 to 1392.
25. What is the Shogun? In feudal Japan, a supreme military commander who ruled in the name of the emperor.
